Elf on the Shelf: A Fun Tradition or Too Much?

April 01 .2026 8 min read

Before you get the pitchforks ready, hear me out. I know Elf on the Shelf is a beloved tradition for many families, and yes, it’s cute! But let’s take a moment to think about what we’re really doing here.

Christmas has always been magical. Remember waking up at the crack of dawn to rip open presents, sneaking a peek at the tree, or maybe even getting a little something special on Christmas Eve? It was MAGIC! Our parents didn’t need an army of elves or daily Pinterest-worthy antics to make it happen.

But somewhere along the way, we couldn’t just leave it at that, could we? Now we’ve got multiple elves (one for each kid), elf pets, elf babies, and these little guys are delivering gifts every night like Amazon Prime with a Santa hat.

Here’s the thing: in trying to make Christmas “next-level,” are we creating balanced, humble, grateful kids? Or are we teaching them that magic always has to be bigger, better, and more elaborate to mean something? Are we setting them up for constant disappointment as adults when life isn’t full of daily surprises and presents?

Let’s be real. The pressure we’re putting on ourselves—and the expectations we’re setting for our kids—is a lot. When does it stop? When is enough, enough?

Our kids deserve magical childhoods, and yes, we all want to create unforgettable moments for them. But maybe those moments don’t have to involve five elves, nightly gifts, and perfectly staged photo ops. Maybe the magic is in the simpler things: the traditions, the togetherness, and the love.

I’m not saying ditch your elf (I’m not a monster, lol), but maybe we should ask ourselves: Are we doing this for our kids, or are we just keeping up with the holiday hype?

It’s food for thought—and I’d love to hear your take. Let’s chat below
